Secure attachment in men

The making and breaking of affectional bonds

Men who are Self-reliant and also capable of being comfortable with asking for help when needed, and to maintain trust in situations where there might be distrust are capable of succeeding in relationships.

These people, even in the face of danger, are able to maintain trust and cooperation with others. Men who turn out this way normally have a strong identification with their father and have been raised in close and supportive communities.

These men might experience anxiety in appropriate situations, but the anxiety is neither prolonged nor severe.

A happy peaceful home where both parents share responsibilities and interests, and were loving and giving to the children is key to growing up secure. They felt secure with their mother in childhood.

In secure homes children are not only Self-reliant, they also rely on others when needed. They also have personal aspirations, their sense of responsibility, and ability to deal with the world. Family support is available.

Self-reliance, while resting on a secure attachment to a trusted figure and developing from it is the key pattern to secure attachment in later life. These early patterns are likely forerunners of later ones.
