When you learn to drive, they teach you to check your vehicle first. In your life, that is you.
They then teach you to assess that there are no children, or people, under the car or behind the car, to maintain safety for others. To you, that is assessment.
As you drive, you enter the road with awareness. You are supposed to be visible, as well as being able to see others. You check the mirrors regularly, as well as assessing the sides of the road, to ensure you and others are safe. This is also when you pay attention to blind spots.
Before you start work, you do a risk assessment of your work environment. You ensure that not only are you safe to proceed, but you ensure others, the equipment and environment are safe as well, and fit for purpose. As you work, you keep evaluating your work area. This is the same approach that works with anything you do in your relationships. This is the same approach that works with anything you do in your relationships.
Whatever situation you are entering requires an objective evaluation. Whatever conversation you have with others calls for reflection. Whatever you do in life, if you objectively evaluate a situation, you can minimise hitting people and objects, car crashes or difficult situations.
You also need to keep assessing your blind spots everyday, by evaluating yourself; thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
When you proceed to say whatever you want to say to others, or do whatever you feel like doing, without reflection, you can end up harming yourself and others in the process. You can end saying and doing things you might regret.
There is no rush out there, to say or do anything instantly. Feel your feelings. Listen to your inner critic. Explore root cause. Parent yourself and create solutions in your best interest. Then take action that you will not regret.
Most situations in which we react can be avoided if we apply objective evaluation.
